How to make a passport-size photo
Start with the requirements for the country and application that will receive the photo. “Passport size” is not one universal format, so the correct shape, dimensions, background, and submission rules can vary.
1. Check the official requirements first
Before editing, open the current instructions from the issuing authority. For a U.S. passport application, use the U.S. Department of State Passport Photos guidance. It includes the current requirements and examples.
Do not assume that a square crop or a 600 × 600 output will be accepted for every country or application.
2. Start with a suitable photo
- Use a clear photo with the subject fully visible.
- Follow the authority’s instructions for background, lighting, expression, and head position.
- Do not rely on this site to detect whether a photo meets those rules.
3. Crop the visible frame
Open the passport-size photo tool, choose your image, and move the locked square frame over the part you want to keep. Cropping changes what remains visible; it does not check facial dimensions or acceptance.
4. Resize only when the application asks for it
After the crop is right, use the tool’s fixed output or the general image resize tool when the application specifies exact pixel dimensions. Keep the image proportional and avoid stretching it.
