How target-size image compression works
The compressor encodes the image at a high quality first, then searches between higher and lower quality settings until it finds the highest practical JPEG or WebP quality whose file is at or below your target. Choose a 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, or 200 KB preset, or enter a custom limit of at least 5 KB.
Why a very small KB limit can reduce image dimensions
Quality reduction cannot remove enough data from every image. A detailed 12MP phone photo may need fewer pixels to fit a 20 KB limit, so dimensions are preserved first and reduced only when the lowest practical quality at the original size is still too large. The aspect ratio stays the same, and the result tells you when dimensions changed.
JPEG and WebP compression
JPEG is widely supported and works well for photographs, but it does not preserve transparency; transparent areas receive a white background. WebP can produce a smaller modern image and can preserve transparency when your browser supports WebP encoding. PNG files can be used as input, while exact-target PNG output is not part of this version.
Limitations
- Exact target-size output is currently available for JPEG and WebP. PNG exact-target output is not claimed in this version.
- Very small limits can require reducing pixel dimensions, and lossy compression can reduce visual quality.
