How to convert JPG to PNG

By Sekora Studios · Updated

Convert JPG to PNG when an application requires PNG or you want to avoid another lossy encoding step. Conversion keeps the existing picture, including its background and any JPG artifacts.

Steps

  1. Open JPG to PNG and select the JPG or JPEG file.
  2. Check the preview to confirm you chose the correct image.
  3. Convert the file without changing its pixel dimensions.
  4. Download the PNG and keep your original JPG.

Will converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. JPG stores a complete opaque picture. A white background is made of white pixels, and those pixels stay white in the PNG. PNG supports transparency, but format support alone does not create a cutout.

If you need a transparent logo, look for its original transparent source. Converting an opaque copy will not reveal anything behind its background.

Will the image become sharper?

A PNG export avoids introducing another lossy compression step, but existing JPG blocks, halos and blur remain. File conversion does not regenerate the source image.

PNG can be useful for further work when you want to avoid repeated JPEG re-encoding. Keep one source and make each edit from it. Converting back and forth after every change adds compression loss.

Why did the file size increase?

A photographic JPG is usually already compressed with some loss of information. Encoding its decoded pixels as PNG can take more space. Choose PNG when the destination requires it or when you want to avoid another lossy export. PNG does not guarantee a smaller file.

If the receiving form needs fewer KB and accepts JPG, use the compression tool instead. If it needs exact dimensions, resize first and check the final exported image.
