How to convert WebP to PNG

By Sekora Studios · Updated

Convert a static WebP image to PNG when you need a PNG file or want to keep existing transparency. PNG does not restore detail lost in the source and can produce a larger file.

Open WebP to PNG

Steps

  1. Open WebP to PNG and choose a static WebP file.
  2. Check the preview, including any transparent edges.
  3. Convert the image. This format conversion keeps its pixel width and height.
  4. Download the PNG and use that copy in the application that requires it.

Will the PNG keep a transparent background?

If the WebP already contains transparency, PNG can retain it. If it has a solid white or colored background, conversion keeps those pixels. It does not identify the subject or erase the background.

Transparency can be difficult to see against a plain page. Inspect the preview’s checkerboard areas and test the downloaded file against the background where you will use it.

Why is the PNG bigger?

PNG encodes the decoded image without another lossy compression step. A photographic WebP may already be compressed efficiently, so its PNG version can require more bytes. A larger file does not mean the source detail improved.

For a form that accepts JPG and sets a strict file-size limit, WebP to JPG may be more practical. It replaces transparent areas with a solid color, so choose based on the destination’s requirements.

Can I improve a blurry WebP this way?

No. Conversion preserves the pixels available after decoding; it cannot recover missing detail. Keep the highest-quality source you have. For an animated file, use a converter that preserves animation. This converter handles static images.

Can I use this on iPhone?

Use the converter in your browser with a supported static file, then download the PNG. The file picker and save prompt vary by browser.

Does PNG remove a white background?

No. A white background remains white unless it was already transparent in the source.
